The disconnect on data and customer metrics

I once read the book, “The last link” written by an outstanding author called Gregg Crawford.  It is a book that relate to very good sales diciplines as  far as I remember.

There are pros and cons of a hobby business and a business with a written plan.  In a hobby business, one has the independence and built more about the passion towards what they enjoy most.  Yet, having a viable business as good as it may sound needs written plan to guide you through especially turbulent times.

What happens is that more often times there is a disconnect between the data’s you gather versus the actual plans. On which either is more accurate has be factual in terms of the entrepreneur devicing their own system of metrics.   From having a viable to a hobby business is very interesting for me.  This was because in havinga real business, we used so many kinds of benchmarking tools plus the plans and the financials. 

This was the immediate disconnect when I went back to a hobby business because, the amount of absolute time and dedication are not much given as when you are solely relying on a business as the only income source.  Yet, I am still grateful because the experienced I have encountered on both had given me years of perserverance to continue regardless of pure sales or revenue data’s.  It’s like looking at a profit and loss statement looking at it line by line, you will discover the true picture.  Sometimes, when sales decline and revenue are reduced one can see that other avenues have grown or might have incurred more cost leverage which is why there are no cash flows in the streamline.

The problem of hobby entrepreneurs and unfortunately ill fated toxic bankers is that rate of returns where always gauge on increasing sales volumes and revenue increases as signified in income statements.  I remember years ago when our cashier and accounting personnels were complaining that the business is always a loss just because the net income retained at year’s end is 0 and or not enough.  The magic of entrepreneurship is the discovery process as the entrepreneur becomes very analytical of their own business over the years. 

Sometimes,  the growth we may be looking for is in the form of shareholder value such as the recent re-evaluation of Bloomberg Media.   Even with an income of a $1.00 for it’s CEO,  by the time the stakes were re-evaluated the business  is valued more.   Some other considerations depending on the business model, can be in inventory, equipments and more often than not the so called tangible and intellectual assets that the founder entrepreneur might have already created over time.  A lot of times especially in sustainable innovative companies, only after an accurate business valuation and for the professionals and experts to analyze the complete business model will even founder entrepreneurs realize themselves.

A business is a magic world of numbers.  The key is for an entrepreneur is to be soulfully relative to that reality.  Because if you are, you would know in a mere blink of an eye.  So called experts who sometimes are actual saboteurs because they could be in the payroll of a big multinational competitor will always challenge a small entrepreneur.

My belief is that it is better to stay focus and exercise humility.  Because if the data, the numbers, actuals and plan are fiscally accurate, then let’s talk about metrics and data.

Why do so many people click online for ads?

Either true or fraudulent clicks, pay per click has been a new way of advertising in the internet phenomenon.  According to marketing guru’s, people are either influence to buy, jealous of competition or simply curious to know more.

In today’s internet world, the complementing towards the text ads are extremely important when placing banners and online advertising.  The new easier way of finding what is needed or wanted instead of trying to browse through yellow and white pages and printed directories.

Even start-ups nowadays are trying to find a way on how they can monetize their internet presence.  Thanks to major search engines like Google and Yahoo as well as other players that have spent major investments in perfecting the craft of click and search advertising.

Inspite of the massive investments, click frauds are always a problem that prevails and sometimes can be intentionak.

As the culprits do, they click on the ads as they know they will eventually drain one’s revenue as each click needs to be paid.

Yet, we are still hopeful that these abusers will get caught doing their acts as there are struggling companies merely trying to survive.

Hence, people click on online ads for the mere essence of getting more informed.

What greedy capitalist use to say about our business model

Your losing what,  you crazy, you stupid, your not making that money, your giving that away, your giving a better quality, or are you out of your mind?

These are the familiar words that we use to hear and humbly I say “Yes” to the king of the jungles, the money predatory financial whiz, the so called genuises of the venture capitalist in Salicon Valley or the crony predatory banking institutions.

I think it has been a notion if not a norm of thinking always of getting more and more, and making money and profit first before giving away a product or service to that so called genuises whom we look up to can really make money.

Over the years we have struggled through these harsh words, I use to tell my staff that we should show the world that we can give the service and expectations and we will still make money on other products and services.

But I guess that was not the words the wall street gangsters want to hear.  What they want to hear and see are business plans and financial statements of profits right even when you launched in day one.  Hence, no one wanted us for credit accomodation, we were a risk, we were nobodies but still we have prevailed.

As 2009 enters with a new hope from a new determined president for the people in the United States, suddenly there is a sudden shift of evolution in the importance of micro emerging enterprises founded by limited earners for low income earners like us.

Main Street is finally in.  The rich and opulent empires with huge inventories and fullfillment centers of tons of goods are up to the skies not moving, dead and still counted as an asset when now it has come to be a big liability.

Giving away stuff, products and services for free especially better than expectations are the hardest challenges that egoistic materialistic entrepreneurs used to be.   Not for us because we are use to be the guinea pigs of the emperors who thought we were either mentally crazy or stupid since we were not graduates of prestigious business schools like their management teams, advisory teams or board of directors.

Today’s environment is an evolution of unemployments, lay-offs, yet home based small businesses and independent contractors on the rise even using social networking sites as opportunities of hope.

Customer friendly environments are no loner just focus on the great lips of the inside sales teams, call centers but the real entrepreneurial hard working go do it, show it and great satisfaction entrepreneurs.

Be it in their profit or loss statements, balance sheets, budgets or grandeur customer service has evolve so much differently today after America finally realize what is to be a limited earner, poor and struggling.

What type of businesses will succeed during a recession?

In a gloomy economy such as a recession, sometimes we wonder what are the basic three types of businesses and businesspeople will remain like:
1. Advanced organizations with a vision and actionable idea about how to position and present themselves according to the times.
2. Intelligent Entrepreneurs who do not have new ideas but have the resources, staying power and ability to use their assets to bear effectivity even under difficulties.
3. Constant copycats who don’t do anything but follow the leaders and cross their fingers that they survive.

With the onset of mergers and acquisitions in order to push employee productivity, the no. 2 and no. 3 types will create havoc and stress which is of less value unless they are very knowledgeable on change, how to respond and on the end still evolve.

While no. 1 types as the new green economists as they can whether every storm still plant the sseds, act on the ideas and implement the vision. The leaders, managers and entepreneurs in these organizations knows how to elicit innovation and create initiative from their employees. It can be scary at first but in the end will the necessary action to prevail in a gloomy economy and recession
